I was wondering what the current rules on importing Japanese cars into the US. Do they have to go through Canada first? I have family that lives in British Columbia so I was wondering if there is some kind of angle I could work out there. Since the yen is weaker than the dollar, is it possible to make money on flipping some of these JDM cars (Skyline,Supra...) and selling them stateside?

To be eligible for importing the vehicles need to meet department of transportation safety and emission regulations. The same goes for Canada, but I heard there was some law that said if the vehicle is at least 15 years or older the limitations no longer apply, however I also heard they're changing it so that the vehicle needs to be at least 25 years old now.  If you try and are able to get cars stateside this way, depending on the state you live in there's a very good chance that the cars you bring in will be ineligible for registration because either they don't meet emission or safety regulations or because of their origins.  There's also a very good chance that the DOT and customs will seize the vehicles you bring in if you don't have the right paperwork filled out behind them.
