My 2 cents
First of some background--I've been a long time reader of tuning magazine since I was 15, was a "Sport Compact Car" subscriber since 2001, current drive an Evo Rs, have owned a WRX, but does any of this make me an expert or give me any street cred. NOPE! I’m just some guy or smuck with a computer and time.
Like a lot of people I was disappointed, depressed and have even self medicated myself with tequila at the lost of my favorite magazine “SCC.” So when “Modified showed up at my door if hardly help fill the void but is currently winning me over. Which is why I’ve RENEWED my subscription!
On to the REVIEW: The Problem: With all tuner magazines is that they don’t cover a wide enough variety of cars. I’m sick of reading about 350 Z’s, STI’s, Silvia’s, GTR’s, Supras, RX-7, oldschool civics and Evo’s too, but not that much (but again I’m probably bias.) The fact that Peter had to ask about the SRT-4 is sure madness. ***The solution: Try to cover car’s that are less than 10 years old. Sometime I feel like I should just start reading my classic car or something. God please answer my prays and have someone write an article about an Ecotec powered car. The Cobalt supercharge and turbocharged are badass cars, but I only really read a couple of good articles about tuning a Cobalt (and yes, one of them was yours.) There’s a couple Solstices and Sky’s in formula drift that need to be covered. Other suggestions: the Mazda 3 and Miata have tons of potential, whatever happen to the sentra, what about a the econ boxes Kia soul XA or XB.
The Articles: Are like a hot blond, meaning there nice to look at but not much there. Tons of pretty pictures but the writing is a little short, and seem to focus on the show instead of what’s important the go.
The Filler: The buyer’s guide section is a waste of space. The internet and a search engine is better.
The Content: GIVE Jay Chen A RAISE! The comparison test and reviews are what separates a good magazine from a great magazine. Give us the numbers, the graphs, and graphics so we can learn, quote, and talk about them. Your magazine can be the textbook- the go to guide for all things tuning. Keep putting things on the test bench and keep them honest.
The Tire Review Section: Is the biggest surprise ever! Who knew a difficult somewhat boring topic of tires can be covered so well. Tires are hard to review but the article have been great keep them coming. The Need: For more stories, like “Dodging Cones” at the autocross or stories from the track from Andy Hope. The events section in the back is nice, but seem to be just a bunch of pictures. There has to be a cool story somewhere in there especially when a bunch of cool cars come together.
