I have a 2004 Nissan Sentra 1.8  My issue is very difficult to figure out.  At times my car acts as if it has a piston miss fire, and engie check light is on.  I pluged it in and said piston 4 missfire.  I put in new iridium spark plugs oil change and new cold air intake 3 months ago.  so i took the individual distributor cap on piston 4 and put it on piston 3  a week later it started acting u again ass if it was a piston miss fire.  i pluged it again and this time it said piston 1 miss fire.  i was confused because i was guessing it would be piston 3 how the heck it went to piston 1 i have no idea please help me out the only thing i can do is change all the caps and find a new ECU. thanks for your help

Wait- when you say 'individual distributor cap' do you mean ignition coil?  I'm assuming yes.  Before you go and change all four coils, try changing the silone plug boots first- many times they can deteriorate and create an intermittent ground fault.

You could also have a dirty or clogged injector.  Run some fuel injector cleaner through it, and do some full throttle acceleration runs to get the injectors nice and hot and burn off any varnish or gum that has built up on the injector.

If all else fails you can always go to a dyno tuner and see if they might be able to diagnose it for you or even fix it.
